SUBWAY FEATURED STUDENT: NICHOLAS COBOS, DEXTER HIGH SCHOOL
You need tools to build a foundation and Nicholas Cobos of Dexter is in the right place for putting together a rock-solid resume.
You can find him in a local hardware store.
For starters, Cobos is a senior running back and defensive back at Dexter High School.
“I like to think football is my first love, it’s the first sport of the season,” said Cobos. “It kind of gets me in the mood for the rest of the sports.”
It might be his first love, but not his only passion. Nicholas also plays basketball for the Demons. In the spring, Nicholas pulls double duty and competes in baseball AND track. “It’s very challenging, but I like to take advantage of my youth and do all I can, take advantage of every opportunity I have.”
That’s a theme with Nicholas.
He’s a member of the National honors society. He is a part of a youth group at church. If that didn’t keep him busy enough, he works at Dexter hardware down the street from the school. He started the job this past summer and really likes it. “The owner goes to the church where I attend youth group and I guess he noticed my work ethic and he offered me a job. I thought it would be good to earn a little extra money for college.”
He’s considering a future in the medical field, maybe sports medicine or physical therapy.
No matter where his future takes him, he will always have a state title to his name. Cobos helped the Dexter boys track team win state his junior year. “It was great winning state,” recalled Cobos. “We’ve always come close in track. We’d get third and then second the next year and then third again. We’ve always been right there. It was finally our time to take it.”
He hopes add a state football title to this list this year with a roster of 14 seniors. We don’t know how the Demons will do, but they have at least one leader with the right tools for the job.
Dexter will host West Las Vegas in a state semifinal game Saturday at 1pm. The winner will punch a ticket to the state final.
