COMPETE WITH CLASS MOMENT FROM DEMING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
Maricruz Colores-Davila is a senior at Deming High School. She competed in her first cross country race of the season at Silver City on Saturday, August 26th. She was in a tight battle with four girls from Silver and three girls from Organ Mountain for a place in the top ten medal category. Near the end of a long 3.1 mile race, with only twenty meters to go, one of her competitors fainted. Maricruz immediately went to the athlete’s aid and helped her competitor into the arms of the Organ Mountain team. It wasn’t until she checked to make sure the runner was ok that Maricruz then went back to running and finished the race. Her act of sportsmanship cost her an 8th place medal, but she did receive a 10th place medal, and a special place in the hearts of a rival team. “She’s a great representation of competing with class, and we’re all very proud of her grit, determination, and sportsmanship,” said Deming cross country coach Timothy Host.
