TULAROSA FOOTBALL DUO HIT STATE RECORD MARKS
Friday September 29, 2023 turned out to be a record night for Tularosa High School’s Dillon Salazar and Kani Mathis. The quarterback and receiver duo set state record marks for touchdown passes and touchdown receptions in their 68-19 win at Escalante. Salazar tied a New Mexico state record with 9 touchdown throws and senior receiver Kani Mathis caught seven of those touchdown passes, setting a new state record. The previous state mark was 5 touchdown receptions in a game. The total of seven touchdown receptions in a game is tied for third in the National Federation of High Schools record book.
On the game, Salazar was 24-29 passing for 505 yards. Mathis recorded 10 catches for 272 yards, which is the 9th top performance in New Mexico all-time.
Brett Henson of Hatch Valley High School set the New Mexico record for most touchdown passes in a game with 9 against Zuni on November 8, 2003. The mark of 9 touchdown passes by Henson and now Salazar is 9th in the NFHS record book.
Tularosa (4-2) is at home against Cobre this Friday.
