NMAA BOARD SUMMARY INCLUDING CLASSIFICATION AND REALIGNMENT
NMAA Board Summary
November 29, 2023
The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors met in regular session on Wednesday, November 29th in the NMAA Hall of Pride and Honor.
Executive Director Sally Marquez gave her Director’s Report which included a brief recap of the NMAA Fall Championships, a report pertaining to the NMAA Foundation, and results from the recent Commission and Board of Directors elections.
Business Manager Shari Kessler-Schwaner presented the NMAA Financial Report which included ticket sales numbers from the 2023 Fall Championships. The Board also approved the NMAA’s 990 for the 2022-2023 school year.
Assistant Director Tammy Richards presented the NMAA Activities Report which included information pertaining to the State One Act Play competition, activity participation numbers, remaining state activity events to be held in the spring, potential calendar updates, the 2023 collaborative Summer Conference, and the NMAA Foundation’s various fundraising events.
Commissioner of Officials Zac Stevenson presented the New Mexico Officials Association Report which included information regarding Fall Championship officials, eligibility requirements to work state level events, officials’ numbers for winter sports, RefReps, and school personnel and students signing up to help cover lower-level events. Ms. Marquez added information pertaining to ejections from the Fall season.
Mr. Gary Allision, NMAA Commission Chair, presented a discussion item pertaining to volleyball sportsmanship and the NMAA’s Compete with Class initiative.
Ms. Marquez presented a discussion item regarding the shot clock in basketball.
The Board of Directors took action on the following items.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to adopt guidelines and fees for officials in the sport of Powerlifting.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to amend officials’ fees in the sports of Wrestling, Track & Field, Swimming & Diving, and Spirit.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to increase the number of seeds for singles & doubles brackets in State Tennis.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to allow NMOA certified Track & Field coaches to serve as meet officials.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to sanction Marching Band as an NMAA activity.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to adjust forfeiture fees.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to amend eligibility bylaws pertaining to summer school courses.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to increase NMAA membership dues.
-Voted in favor of a proposal for the Classification & Alignment of schools for 2024-2026.
The next NMAA Board of Directors’ meeting is scheduled for December 11, 2023.
