Undefeated Senior Seeks 1st State Title
Albuquerque High senior Leo Rocca is one of the top players in the state. He started on the court at a young age. “My dad and my mom both played, so they started me off at a very young age,” Leo recalls. “Ever since I could walk I remember them tossing me balls. Since then I’ve developed a love for the sport. Competitiveness took over and I’ve always wanted to be the best I can be.”
Rocca is undefeated this year. He poses a challenge for other players being left-handed. “It’s a different spin on the ball that right handers aren’t really used to,” he explains. “There aren’t that many lefties out there, but when I do play another lefty, I know I’m always tricked.”
At the metro championships this week, Leo could face one of his longtime rivals, defending state champ Connor Dils from Albuquerque Academy. “Him and I have been playing for such a long time, he’s one of my best friends and it will be exciting if we get to play each other in the metro finals,” said Leo. “It’s usually pretty close, it’s usually a battle. He got me last time and it’s always a great time playing him.”
Leo has been so close to a state title, but never reached the pinnacle. He hopes this is the year. “My first year, I think I got fourth, then I got third, and last year I got second, hopefully the trend keeps going this year,” Leo said. “I think I’ve got a good chance this year at state. My experience at state has always been great, there’s always great players to compete with, there will be this year, and I’m looking forward to it.”
Leo says he always had that drive to improve his game. “Just to always be the best player I can be, be the best teammate I can be,” he explained. “I want to keep improving every time I come out onto the court.”
The senior committed to play tennis at Pomona College in California this fall.
