NEW MEXICO’S THREE-POINT RECORD IS BROKEN…AGAIN
Earlier this season on January 11th, Springer freshman Paul “Pablo” Romero set a new state record with 16 three pointers in a game. Thursday night against visiting Piedra Vista, Volcano Vista senior Rian Gonzales broke that record with 17 three pointers in their 98-45 win over the Panthers. Gonzales finished with 62 points, which ties him for 6th best all-time in a boys basketball game. Gonzales hit his first six 3-pointers in the first quarter as part of his 20 points in the first eight minutes. Gonzales made another five 3-pointers in the second quarter and had 36 points by halftime. He made another pair of 3’s in the third quarter and eight more points to his game total. In the 4th quarter, Gonzales made four more 3-pointers and scored 18 points. His 62-point performance broke the Albuquerque Public Schools single-game scoring record for boys.
